A Dual-Mode Social-Information-Processing Model to Explain Individual Differences in Children’s Aggressive Behavior

چکیده
Children differ considerably in the social-information-processing (SIP) patterns underlying their aggressive behavior. To clarify these individual differences, we propose a dual-mode SIP model that predicts which processing steps children will take, take them, and under circumstances, how this may lead to aggression. This distinguishes between an automatic reflective mode. The mode is characterized by fast impulsive behavioral responses, whereas deliberate controlled responses. Whether use or moderated level of arousal, depends on interplay child-specific factors (i.e., emotional dispositions, motivational executive functioning) dynamic internal state type situation). provides new insights into children’s unique styles possibilities tailor treatment needs.

Individual Differences in Information Processing
It has been initially established that different forms of information processing are linked to specific patterns of emotional and cognitive state (e.g., Hockey & Hamilton, 1983; Matthews, Derryberry & Siegle; 2000; Matthews, Davies, Westerman, & Stammers, 2000). Although it is likely that many of the basic mechanisms of information processing are common across individuals, the coordination of t...

متن کاملIn the Eye of the Beholder: Eye-tracking Assessment of Social Information Processing in Aggressive Behavior
Acording to social information processing theories, aggressive children are hypersensitive to cues of hostility and threat in other people's behavior. However, even though there is ample evidence that aggressive children over-interpret others' behaviors as hostile, it is unclear whether this hostile attribution tendency does actually result from overattending to hostile and threatening cues. Si...
